What to Check Before Buying a Used Toyota in Jacksonville

September 3rd, 2025 by

Shopping for a used Toyota can be exciting, but it’s easy to get caught up in the moment. We’ve seen it happen plenty of times here at Butler Toyota Jacksonville. A vehicle might look great on the lot, but a closer look can tell you a very different story.

Check the History First

Before you even pop the hood, get the vehicle’s story. A CARFAX or AutoCheck report will show things like accident history, mileage accuracy, and if it’s ever had a salvage or rebuilt title. You might also see if it’s been part of a rental fleet. That’s not always a bad thing, but it’s good to know.

With Toyota certified pre-owned models, you’ll get even more. Every one goes through a 160-point inspection, and we’ll hand you the CARFAX report so you can read through it yourself.

Look for Signs of Good Maintenance

A used Toyota with a solid maintenance record is worth paying attention to. Oil changes every few thousand miles, brake service at the right intervals, and regular fluid checks are all good signs. If the paperwork isn’t there, we can have our service department give it a thorough once-over.

Toyotas like the Camry, Corolla, and RAV4 are built to last, but they still need consistent care to reach those high mileage marks we all talk about.

Walk Around and Sit Inside

Take your time here. Look at the paint in different light and see if the panels match. Open and close each door, the hood, and the trunk. If something sticks or feels off, mention it.

Inside, check the seats for wear, smell the interior for any mustiness, and run your hand over the carpet. Test the A/C, heat, power windows, and audio system. Every button you push now is one less surprise after you’ve signed the papers.

Pop the Hood

Even if you’re not a mechanic, you can still spot obvious problems. Leaks, frayed belts, and corroded battery posts are worth noting. Fluids should look clean and be at proper levels. If you see thick sludge under the oil cap or smell something burnt, that’s a red flag.

We’ve got a Toyota inspection checklist we go through here, and you’re welcome to have us walk you through it on any vehicle you’re serious about.

Take It Out for a Real Drive

Don’t just loop around the block. Get it up to highway speeds. See how it accelerates, how it brakes, and how it feels over bumps. Try a tight turn or two. Turn off the radio for part of the drive so you can hear the engine and suspension.

This is your best shot at feeling what it’s really like to live with the car every day.

Do the Math Before You Say Yes

Before you buy a used Toyota in Jacksonville, check pricing with sites like Kelley Blue Book. Compare the numbers with what you see in our used inventory. Toyota certified pre-owned models often come with warranties and roadside assistance that add extra peace of mind.

You can apply for financing online, so you already know your options before stepping into the showroom.
