How to Program a Toyota Key Fob

March 19th, 2024 by

Toyota provides a wide range of amenities on its cars to improve driving and life. Even though many people take delight in small comforts like remote start, automatic power windows, and keyless entry, many of these amenities depend on a tiny gadget. The Toyota key fob is a crucial component for operating your car. Because part of the Toyota experience is having this handy technology at your fingertips, we want to make sure you can use these features.

You could eventually need to reprogram your key fob to make it compatible with your car, whether you’re buying a new one, need to reprogram your old one, or merely change the battery. Discover how to reset your Toyota key fob and how to unlock a key fob safely.

Opening a Toyota Key Fob: A Guide

It might be necessary to replace the battery if your Toyota key fob stops working after a while or if you feel like it is not responding as quickly as it should. To replace your battery and preserve the shell, you’ll need to figure out how to unlock the key fob correctly. A hidden metal key is incorporated with late model Toyota key fobs. To open your key fob, a unique slot on the fob is specifically made for that purpose. You’ll need to get a flat metal tool that will fit in the notch at the bottom of earlier key fobs. Often, a paper clip, coin, flat blade, or screwdriver will do. The key fob will open when you turn your selected tool clockwise.

How to Change a Battery in the Toyota key fob

Once your key fob is open, you should handle the small parts with caution. Verify that you are on a level, clear, and clean surface so you don’t lose any pieces (some are quite small)! This also ensures that no further dust settles inside your key fob, damaging the internal parts.

The steps to changing your Toyota battery are as follows:

  • Remove the tiny circuit board that is enclosing the battery.
  • Keep an eye on where the battery is positioned within the key fob. Take a quick picture if you can so you have a reference when you reassemble the key fob.
  • Determine what kind of battery your key fob is powered by. Most Toyota key fobs are powered by a CR2032 battery. Alternatively, some fobs might run on a CR2025 battery. To be sure, check your key fob or give our helpful service department a call.
  • After preparing your replacement battery, take out the old one and put it in its proper location. Verify that the image is positioned correctly.
  • Replace the circuit board over the battery with caution.
  • Snap your key fob case back together by aligning the two pieces.
  • To make sure your key fob is functioning properly, press its buttons. If you don’t hear your car react, repeat this process again.

If this still doesn’t work, you may need to program your Toyota Key Fob

  • Close and open the driver’s side door twice in a span of forty seconds.
  • One more time, insert and take out the key from the ignition. (Make sure you finish this in the allotted 40 seconds.)
  • By doing this, you should be able to program remotely.
  • When the programming is successful, you will hear the door locks engage or cycle.
